209. Engine
An engine is the machine that produces the power needed to propel a motor vehicle. In conventional vehicles, an internal-combustion engine burns fuel such as petrol or diesel, while electric vehicles use one or more electric motors instead of a combustion engine.
An engine contains many components that work together to convert energy into mechanical power. Proper lubrication, cooling, maintenance and emissions control are important for reliable operation and vehicle safety.

Is the engine checked during technical inspection in Belgium?
The inspection does not normally involve dismantling the engine, but engine-related systems and their effects can be checked. This includes matters such as emissions, exhaust condition, fluid leaks and other defects that affect roadworthiness or environmental compliance.
Can an engine fault cause a Belgian vehicle to fail technical inspection?
Yes. An engine-related fault can lead to an unfavourable result when it causes excessive emissions, dangerous leakage or another defect covered by the technical inspection requirements.
Can a vehicle's engine be replaced or modified in Belgium?
Engine replacement or modification may affect the vehicle's approved technical characteristics. Significant changes must comply with the applicable vehicle-approval and technical requirements and can require additional approval or inspection.
