7. Bike path

A bike path is a part of a road or a separate route intended primarily or exclusively for people riding bicycles. It may be physically separated from motor traffic, marked on the road surface or identified by traffic signs.

Bike paths may be one-way, two-way or shared with other road users. The permitted users, direction of travel, priority rules and obligation to use the path depend on local traffic signs and regulations.

When must cyclists use a bicycle lane in California?

When travelling slower than the normal traffic flow, cyclists generally must use an available bicycle lane running in their direction, subject to the statutory exceptions. This is a California rule; requirements elsewhere in the United States depend on the applicable state and local law.

When may a cyclist leave a California bicycle lane?

The exceptions include overtaking, preparing for a left turn, avoiding debris or other unsafe conditions, and approaching a place where a right turn is authorised. The lane-use rule has specific exceptions; it is not an unconditional requirement to remain in an unsafe lane.

How should I move out of a California bicycle lane?

First ensure the movement can be made with reasonable safety. Give an appropriate signal when another vehicle may be affected. Having a valid reason to leave the lane does not remove the separate duty to make that movement safely.
