249. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight at which a vehicle is designed or approved to operate when fully loaded. It includes the vehicle itself together with the driver, passengers, fuel, luggage, cargo and other equipment carried by the vehicle.
GVWR is a fixed maximum value and should not be confused with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which is the vehicle's actual weight at a particular moment. The actual loaded weight of the vehicle must not exceed its permitted maximum.
Why does maximum authorised mass affect the licence category in Germany?
The EU-harmonised licence framework generally sets 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass as the category B vehicle threshold. The heavier C1 and C categories have different authorised-mass ranges and conditions. Check the vehicle rating and complete vehicle combination rather than only its present load.
