245. Snow chains
Snow chains are traction devices fitted around vehicle tyres to improve grip on roads covered with snow or ice. They are especially useful on steep or mountainous roads where ordinary tyres may not provide sufficient traction.
Snow chains should be fitted according to the vehicle and chain manufacturer's instructions, normally on the driven wheels. They should be removed when they are no longer needed because driving with chains on clear roads can damage the tyres, chains and road surface.

Does carrying chains eliminate Germany’s winter-tyre requirement?
No. Germany has a situational winter-tyre rule for the tyres fitted to the vehicle. Simply carrying snow chains does not generally replace the requirement for qualifying tyres in wintry conditions.
