66. Bike box

A bike box, also called an advanced stop area, is a marked space at a signal-controlled intersection where cyclists can wait ahead of motor vehicles while the traffic light is red. It is usually positioned between two stop lines and may display a bicycle symbol.

A bike box helps increase cyclist visibility and allows cyclists to position themselves clearly before traffic starts moving. The exact users, markings and traffic-light rules vary between countries.

What is a bike box?

A bike box is a marked waiting area at a signal-controlled intersection where cyclists can position themselves ahead of motor vehicles during a red light.

Why are bike boxes used?

They help make cyclists more visible to drivers and allow cyclists to position themselves according to the direction they intend to travel.

Can cars stop inside a bike box?

Normally, no. Motor vehicles should stop behind the stop line provided for them so that the designated cyclist waiting area remains clear.
