196. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight at which a vehicle is designed or approved to operate when fully loaded. It includes the vehicle itself together with the driver, passengers, fuel, luggage, cargo and other equipment carried by the vehicle.
GVWR is a fixed maximum value and should not be confused with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which is the vehicle's actual weight at a particular moment. The actual loaded weight of the vehicle must not exceed its permitted maximum.
What is the UK term most closely equivalent to GVWR?
The usual UK legal term is maximum authorised mass (MAM), also described as permissible maximum weight. It is the vehicle’s maximum permitted loaded mass, not its weight on a particular journey. A plated train-weight limit is a separate limit for a vehicle-and-trailer combination.
